Meet the soloists in MESSIAH

So, who are the soloists anyway?

Marie Ashley
has been performing opera since the age of sixteen, when she sang the title role in Amahl and the Night Visitors. While earning her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, she performed in the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds both in Charleston, South Carolina, and Spoleto, Italy, where she sang the role of La Novizia in Suor Angelica. While earning her Masters’ Degree in Opera at the University of Hartford, Hartt School of Music, she performed the role of Nella in Gianni Schicchi and Iris in Semele. As a member of the budding Young Artist Program at Palm Beach Opera, Ms. Ashley performed lead and comprimario roles in Madama Butterfly, Tannhäuser, Tosca, Don Carlo, Rigoletto, Carmen, Hänsel und Gretel, Papageno, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Alice in Wonderland. Most recently, Ms. Ashley participated in concerts in Abingdon, England with the Abingdon Summer School for Solo Singers. As a concert soloist, Ms. Ashley sang Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s Magnificat in Belgorod-Dnistrovsky and Odessa, Ukraine, with a festival chorus of several American and Ukrainian choirs and the Odessa Opera Orchestra. Locally, she has appeared with the Lynn University Community Chorus, and the St. Lucie Chorale. She holds teaching posts at Palm Beach Atlantic University, as well as Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton. Ms. Ashley resides in Boynton Beach with her husband, Dr. Carl P. Ashley, a conductor.

Mezzo Soprano Kristin Brouwer continues to gain attention as an up-and-coming performer of both opera and concert works. A graduate of the esteemed Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Ms. Brouwer has performed under the guidance of celebrated conductors and stage directors, including Sir Colin Graham, David Effron, David Morelock, Imré Pallo, Matthias Kunsch, and John Poole. Recent operatic roles include Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, and Dritte Dame in Die Zauberflöte. As a concert soloist, Ms. Brouwer has been heard in Handel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass in A-flat, Bach’s Magnificat, the Vaughan Williams Magnificat, Gretchaninoff’s All-Night Vigil, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. Ms. Brouwer has been mentored by renowned voice teachers Andreas Poulimenos, Edward Zambara, and Kathleen Kaun. As a student at Indiana University, she received a graduate assistantship and was the recipient of the Kohlmeier Award. Currently, Ms. Brouwer serves as an Adjunct Instructor of Voice at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Palm Beach Community College.

A native of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, tenor Bryon Grohman performs frequently as soloist on both the concert and opera stage. Recent operatic roles include Gilbert in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Joe in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West as part of the esteemed Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artist’s Program, Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Don Narciso in Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia with the Indiana University Opera Theatre, Pastore in the Chicago Lyric Opera’s production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, and Spoletta in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis production of Puccini’s Tosca. Mr. Grohman made his Boston Symphony Orchestra debut in Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are with the composer conducting. As a Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Fellow, he sang the role of Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and, at the request of Seiji Ozawa, returned to Tanglewood to perform Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff. Recent concert soloist engagements have included Handel’s Messiah with the Bloomington Early Music Festival, the Creation with Palm Beach Atlantic University, the Evangelist in Bach’s Johannes Passion, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Britten’s St. Nicholas Mass. Grohman premiered the role of Nicholas in a performance of Death and the Powers, a new opera by Tod Machover and Robert Pinsky previewed in Monte-Carlo during the 2005 Opera Europa conference. Mr. Grohman has served as choral conductor at Wellesley College, New England Conservatory of Music, and the Church of Our Saviour, Brookline, Massachusetts. Mr. Grohman holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Vocal Performance and a Master of Music in Conducting from New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, and is currently a Doctor of Music candidate in Music Literature and Vocal Performance at Indiana University.


Gordan Longhofer is no stranger to audiences of South Florida. Since coming to West Palm Beach in 1988, he has appeared with numerous organizations in opera and oratorio. His repertoire of more than 35 roles includes dramatic and comedic characters. He has been seen as Bartolo in The Barber of Seville, Monterone in Rigoletto, Timur in Turandot, Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer, and as Merlin in the world premiere of Madeline and Merlin’s Magic at Midnight. Mr. Longhofer currently teaches vocal music and reading for the Palm Beach County School District and enjoys spending spare time with his family in outdoor activities.

AUDITIONS!

The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches will be holding auditions for new members on September 4, 2007 at Vera Lee Rinker Hall on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic University. Those who wish to audition are asked to come at 7:00 pm with a solo piece that they would like to sing. All applicants will also be asked to sight-read. Auditions are open to professional and amateur singers of all types and voice parts. Professional training is not required.

Here it is! The 2007|2008 Season!

The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches will open their season on November 18, 2007 at 4:00 pm at the Bethesda-By-The-Sea Church in Palm Beach with a concert entitled "FAMOUS ALLEUIAS AND HALLELUJAS!" which will feature the music of Bach, Beethoven, Franck, Handel, Haydn, Lewandowski, Mozart, Thompson, and others.

The overwhelmingly popular MESSIAH by George Frederic Handel follows on December 18, 2007 at 5:00 pm. This holiday favorite will be presented at The Royal Poinciana Chapel at 60 Cocoanut Row on Palm Beach. Soloists feature Marie Ashley, Soprano, Kristin Brouwer, Mezzo Soprano, Bryon Grohman, Tenor, and Gordan Longhofer, Bass.

Rounding out the season is “AN EVENING OF GILBERT & SULLIVAN” on March 26, 2008 at 8:00 pm presented at Rinker Playhouse at The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. The program will feature arias, duets, and choruses from Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, Gondoliers, Mikado, and others. The soloists are Judy Davis, Soprano, Sonia Santiago, Mezzo Soprano, Bill Wynn, Tenor, and Bill Stafford, Baritone.

Antiques Fair at the Chapel

The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches will hold an ANTIQUES APPRAISAL FAIR: UNVEILING YOUR TREASURES on February 18, 2007 at The Royal Poinciana Chapel, 60 Cocoanut Row, in Palm Beach for the benefit of the chorus which has brought the joy of choral music to this community since 1979. The public is invited to participate in the event. The cost is $20 for admission and one appraisal and $10 for admission only. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 845-9696. To have an item appraised, place your reservation soon as there will be limited space.

Antiques and Collectibles will be identified and discussed with evaluations on many of the objects d’art on a one to one interview basis sharing this information with the audience in attendance. Appraiser, Vivian A. Highberg, who has appraised nationally throughout the United States, will conduct this event. Ms. Highberg has been an appraiser for almost 20 years and is a consultant, antiques expert, lecturer, educator, liquidator, and broker in the antiques world having appeared weekly on the local CBS news in the Pittsburgh market, on South Florida Today, and as an appraiser on the Antiques Road Show for several seasons.

Founded by the enthusiastic, talented, and dynamic Dr. Jack W. Jones, the Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches has performed throughout south Florida as well as with the Palm Beach Opera, Ballet Florida, at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and several European concert tours. The proceeds from this appraisal event will be used for music purchases, performing with full orchestra, hall rental, and such expenses as to promote quality performances of choral music in a live venue.

Messiah History

ROSSINI STABAT MATER AUDITIONS!

Our performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater will be held on April 1, 2007 at 5pm at St. Edward's Catholic Church on Palm Beach. We are looking for singers of all voice parts to join the chorus for the performance. This piece is INCREDIBLE! We'll have a full orchestra and a quartet of professional soloists to bring the piece to life. Check out some background on the work and it's composer HERE.

MESSIAH - Soloist Swap

Our soprano and tenor soloists will not be able to sing in the performance because of illness. Not to worry! Their replacements are sure to please!

Soprano Renee Costanzo has degrees from The Eastman School of Music and University of Miami, sings with Palm Beach Opera, and has been heard as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Norina in Don Pasquale, Adina in L'Elisir D'amore, and Gilda in Rigoletto.

Tenor Christian Soto has wowed audiences with his portrayals of Jaquino in Fidelio, Idomeneo in Idomeneo, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Elvino in La Sonnambula, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, and Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore.

Don't forget to bring your scores so you can sing along! We'll have a sing-along section of the church where all the closet singers can sing to their heart's content.

06/07 SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT!

MASTERWORKS CHORUS UNVEILS SPECTACULAR SEASON!

PALM BEACH, FL August 23, 2006 --- Now in it's 29th year, The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches will present three performances with works by Fauré, Handel, and Rossini accompanied by a LIVE orchestra in their 2006/2007 season.

The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches will open their season on November 19, 2006 at 5:00 pm at the DeSantis Family Chapel on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic University with a concert entitled "FRENCH CONNECTION" which will feature Gabriel Fauré's sublimely lyrical REQUIEM as it's centerpiece. Other works on the program include French art song and choral favorites such as César Franck's PANIS ANGELICUS, a portion of Camille Saint-Saëns' CHRISTMAS ORATORIO, and an excerpt from Hector Berlioz's L'ENFANCE DU CHRIST. Soloists include Ann Teeter Ryan, Soprano, Tammy Locke Ross, Soprano, Javier Bernardo, Tenor, Marty Marshall, Tenor, and Malcolm Arnold, Baritone. The overwhelmingly popular MESSIAH by George Frederic Handel follows on December 17, 2006 at 5:00 pm. This holiday favorite will be presented at The Royal Poinciana Chapel at 60 Cocoanut Row on Palm Beach. Soloists feature Yudith Diaz, Soprano, Misty Bermudez, Mezzo Soprano, Martin Shalita, Tenor, and Lloyd Reshard, Baritone. Rounding out the season is Gioacchino Rossini's STABAT MATER on April 1, 2007 at 5:00 pm presented at St. Edward's Catholic Church on Palm Beach. Although known for his operas, many consider the exciting STABAT MATER to be the finest work Rossini ever wrote. The soloists are Wendy Jones, Soprano, Ceci Grasso Dadisman, Mezzo Soprano, Javier Bernardo, Tenor, and Mark Aliapoulios, Baritone. "We are so excited to be performing these great works with wonderful soloists and a fantastic orchestra...It will be a great season!" acclaimed Dr. Jack W. The Masterworks Chorus of the Palm Beaches is an 80-voice ensemble of professional and amateur singers from throughout Palm Beach County directed by it's founder Dr. Jack W. Jones.
